Keeping Fresh Berries from Getting Moldy

I LOVE berries and buy fresh berries from our local grocery store. I put them in my yogurt, ice cream, or just by themselves as a snack. Monkey loves them as well. Unfortunately, within a week they tend to get moldy and we have to toss the uneaten berries out.

I was talking with a co-worker who buys berries close to the expiration to save money. She told me how she keep fresh berries from getting moldy. Curious, I tried it at home for two weeks and it seems to work pretty nicely. Here is her Berry Wash Mix:

* Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar with 2 1/2 cups of water in a medium size bowl.
* Place berries into the solution and gently agitate the mixture. Making sure all parts of the berries are coated with the solution!
* Using a colander remove the berries from the mixture and rinse with cold water.
* Gently pat the berries dry with a paper towel. Place the berries in sealed container in the refrig until you’re ready to eat.

This simple solution for keeping berries fresh costs pennies and has saved us from wasting money on spoiled produce.
