Protecting a Family Nest Egg

Many young couples would rather not think about the “What if’s” in life. What if I lose my job? What if I have a medical emergency? Yet every couple with children should be planning for those emergencies you hope never happen. In today’s economy, many families are living pay check to pay check. When and if something happens do you have money in your nest egg to help cover those expenses? Some families are just one emergency way from having the rug pulled out from underneath them and financial woe.

Here are a few of my tips and hits to plan for those unexpected emergencies:

1)Savings account. Seems simple right? Just put a little bit a way each pay check in a separate account to keep on hand for an emergency. Well, sometimes that does not happen and you need a little extra to help get you by. So you transfer money over with the intention to “pay it back” later. Then of course you forget or never do. Simply put, your saving account becomes your personal ATM. What you need to do is have one or two separate saving accounts. One for every day needs, like those just to get you by. And one for those big ticket items such as medical emergencies or a vacation. Have your paycheck automatically transfer say $100 to your savings account. Out of sight out of mind. If you can’t find the extra money try to brown bag your lunch or make your own coffee. You’ll find that having that a full "nest" is comforting!

2)Insurance policy or plan. This is a no brainer people. You should always have the following insurance policies: Life, health, and auto insurance. Yes, these policies can cost a pretty penny and it’s all based on the “What if”. This is a simple way to plan ahead thus, protecting your family and financial nest egg. With medical insurance you’ll only have to pay a small percentage of the medical bills. I was recently in a car accident in which my SUV was totaled. Just by having insurance it covered the remaining balance on my car, took care of the rental car, and helped get us back some equity as a down payment for a new SUV.

3)Get out of Debt. Enough said. You can’t really start saving in your nest egg unless you pay off all your credit cards and start living in a cash only mentality. Credit can be good for emergencies but not when you want to buy a TV that you can’t otherwise afford. We are slowly paying off our debt and making cash only purchases. Any extra money we have at the end of the month goes toward an extra payment for one of the remaining credit cards.

4)Invest in a 401k plan. Sure you invest your money but did you stop to think about where it goes? Take the time to review your 401K plan to see where your money is being allocated. Face it; the market is pretty unsteady at the moment. If you have all your eggs in one basket who’s to say it won’t all be taken away. Invest wisely and spread out your money.

Do you have any special tips and hints to help protect your nest egg and your family? It’s always important to be prepared, especially for your family.

Did you know that half of Americans say they are under-insured? That’s 58 million* of us. And 70%* of people with kids under 18 say they would be in serious trouble if something happened to the primary breadwinner.

Experts say a good rule of thumb is to insure 5 to 10 times your income. It sounds like a lot, but it’s really not. Think about what you’re really worth. Life insurance will help cover the cost of your mortgage, medical & funeral expenses, continuing childcare, living expense and college tuition.

How many people would have to be hired to do all the things you do for your family? Salary.com estimates the average stay-at-home mom would earn $117,867 per year if she were paid for all the work she does.

Most people feel overwhelmed when they think about this stuff. Your local Allstate agent can talk you through your situation and help you plan for the future today. Allstate and their agents have been helping customers protect their families for over 50 years.

The Day Baby Was Born App by Tommee Tippee

I can’t believe that Monkey is almost two years old! I can still remember the day of his birth. At the time I did not blog about his birth but looking back I really wish I had. I plan to blog about our next little one when we decide to expand our family. There are special times that I wish I could have remembered like doctor’s visits or wished I could’ve jotted down my emotions. I did not have a pregnancy journal but looking back I again wish I had.

My pregnancy was really smooth. No morning sickness or discomforts. To sum it up it was perfect. So prefect that my Monkey decided to stay in my tummy a few more weeks, 41 weeks to be exact. By that time I was ready to have he out. Yes, because of the discomfort I now felt but mostly because I couldn’t wait any longer to hold him in my arms. I did not know what the true meaning of unconditional love was until I held him in my arms. We schedule to have him induced on November 11th. I got up that morning with butterflies in my tummy and short cramping. It thought it was because I was nervous and excited that my baby was going to be born. We drove to the hospital early that morning and my cramps got a bit stronger. I didn’t think nothing of it. Once admitted and placed in my room my doctor informed me that I was already in labor! What?! Monkey decided on his own that he would be born on Verteran’s Day. I felt small pains here an there but at around noon I need to have the doctor give me the meds! After that I fell asleep during most of the labor. Then came the heavy pushing and at 5:45pm that day Monkey was born. I was amazed and my hubby cried. It was a life changing moment that I will never forget.

Tommee Tippee's The Day Baby Was Born™ created a new application for mommy’s-to-be. It is a free web application that automatically gathers information about the day your child was born, creating a storybook that you can treasure and share. I wish it had existed when I was pregnant! To see a sample storybook created with The Day Baby Was Born click here: http://tommeetippee.sierrabravo.net/pdf/tt_storybook_example2b.pdf or to watch a video click here: http://www.thedaybabywasborn.com/?t=video

It has so many cool features to capture your baby’s birth experience. One of the things I like about the app is that you can add short blurbs on your pregnancy milestones like when you found out the baby’s sex or even when you felt that first kick! You can add pictures, list the birth information, feature current events on the date of your baby’s birth! All of it would be documented in one place. No need to go back to Facebook, blog, or twitter pages to retrace your posts. One feature that I absolutely LOVE is that you can write a little note to your baby before it’s born. How sweet is that!

When we decide to expand our family you can bet that I will have The Day Baby Was Born application from Tommee Tippee. It’s is a simple and wonderful way to have a lasting memory of your pregnancy and the moment your baby arrived.

Tips For Changing your Wiggleworm's Diaper

My Little Monkey can be a handful when it's time to change his diaper! As a new mommy, I never thought diaper changes would be so cumbersome. With each new milestone my son reached it became a new way to change a diaper. First was figuring out a way not to get peed on! Hello, washcloth my new BFF. Once Monkey could rollover it was a task trying to keep him down mid-diaper change! Then once he learned how to crawl, he would flip over and crawl away when I'd place him on the bed. Now that Monkey is a toddler I've adapted to a new way of changing his diaper. But, you can find my Monkey happily yelling and laughing running away, naked, across the living room. Thus leaving me left holding a diaper in my hands. We plan to expand our family soon so here a few quick tips I've learned and will do differently next time:

Distractions
With the next monkey, I’ll make more of an effort to insure the baby has a toy or something to entertain themselves with while I get down to the "dirty work". The first year of my son's life we did not have any type of toy for him to play with so he'd happily play with my necklace. Thus, I've had to replace a few. Once we installed a small mobile over his changing station he'd happily giggle and goo at his reflection in the mirror. Or I'd shake the rattle for him to play.

Organization
Having a well stocked changing station is very, very important. This way you'll have all your diaper needs in one location. No need to rush over to the diaper stash or grab a new tube of cream from the other room. We live in two story home so to make it easier we have two changing stations located on each floor. Both are well stocked with fresh diapers, cream, wipes, and a toy. At the end of each week we check the stash to see if they need to be restocked.

Pit Crew Style
As a new mommy I admit I had never changed a diaper before my son was born. Thus I didn't have much baby experience and slow at diaper changes. I'd take my time to make sure it cleaned every part and make sure the tabs were on perfectly. We'll that flew right out the window when Monkey started to turn. It was a NASCAR Pit Crew in my home. Plop baby down, grab a new diaper, remove dirty diaper, clean mess, apply cream, replace, and he's off! We've got places to go and no time for perfection!

So that's my game plan for smoother diaper changes next time I have a new baby. What are your best strategies for dealing with a wiggle worm baby during diaper changes?
