Distractions
With the next monkey, I’ll make more of an effort to insure the baby has a toy or something to entertain themselves with while I get down to the "dirty work". The first year of my son's life we did not have any type of toy for him to play with so he'd happily play with my necklace. Thus, I've had to replace a few. Once we installed a small mobile over his changing station he'd happily giggle and goo at his reflection in the mirror. Or I'd shake the rattle for him to play.
Organization
Having a well stocked changing station is very, very important. This way you'll have all your diaper needs in one location. No need to rush over to the diaper stash or grab a new tube of cream from the other room. We live in two story home so to make it easier we have two changing stations located on each floor. Both are well stocked with fresh diapers, cream, wipes, and a toy. At the end of each week we check the stash to see if they need to be restocked.
Pit Crew Style
As a new mommy I admit I had never changed a diaper before my son was born. Thus I didn't have much baby experience and slow at diaper changes. I'd take my time to make sure it cleaned every part and make sure the tabs were on perfectly. We'll that flew right out the window when Monkey started to turn. It was a NASCAR Pit Crew in my home. Plop baby down, grab a new diaper, remove dirty diaper, clean mess, apply cream, replace, and he's off! We've got places to go and no time for perfection!
So that's my game plan for smoother diaper changes next time I have a new baby. What are your best strategies for dealing with a wiggle worm baby during diaper changes?
